Pacific typhoon
As of Saturday afternoon, EDT, Tropical Storm Mindulle was about 170 miles south-southwest of Tokyo, Japan and moving northward at 17 mph. Maximum sustained winds were 50 mph with gusts to 65 mph. Mindulle will continue to approach Japan into Monday, local time.
Tropical Storm Lionrock was about 340 miles east-northeast of Okinawa, Japan and moving southwest at 10 mph. Maximum sustained winds were 40 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Lionrock will continue to meander east of the Ryukyu Islands the next few days as it pushes slowly off to the west. The storm will continue to strengthen over the next several days and approach typhoon force as it moves near the southern Ryukyu Islands.
The storm is looking stronger over the past few satellite images as it continues to show increased convection and dry air is being pushed out of the storm. This, along with the warm water temperatures will allow further strengthening over the week. Rough surf will affect much of southern Japan and the eastern parts of the Ryukyu Islands as it spins.
The remains of Tropical Depression Kompasu will move over Hokkaido into Monday with some rain and winds. Rainfall of up to 4 inches is possible with the system and wind gusts should be under 40 mph with this, mainly on the southern and eastern coastline.
Lastly, an area of low pressure is located to the east of the Mariana Islands. As this low tracks to the northwest early this week, there is a small chance that it will become better organized, developing into a tropical system. Indications at this time are that this will pose no significant threat to land for the next several days.
